Binance CEO Richard Teng has publicly criticized the Nigerian government for their harsh treatment of Tigran Gambaryan, an American executive of the exchange who has been detained since February. Teng, in a post made on September 3rd, emphasized his concern over a viral video depicting Gambaryan struggling to walk into a courtroom. Teng demanded an end to the inhumane treatment and called for Gambaryan to be allowed to return home for medical treatment and to be with his family.

The video showcased Gambaryan being denied the use of a wheelchair despite his visible struggles. The American executive was seen limping into an Abuja courtroom on September 2nd, with prison authorities refusing his requests for assistance. Instead, he was left dragging his left leg behind him and only allowed to use a single crutch for support. Gambaryan expressed his frustration, claiming he was innocent and questioning why he was being subjected to such treatment.

The disturbing video aligns with reports from Gambaryan’s family regarding his deteriorating health while in Nigerian custody. His legal team filed a bail application on medical grounds as he suffers from various health conditions, including malaria, pneumonia, tonsillitis, and a herniated disc that has caused him severe pain and limited mobility. Despite these serious health issues, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of Nigeria opposed the bail application, stating that Gambaryan was not in poor health. The judge did, however, order that Gambaryan be allowed to use a wheelchair during court proceedings.

The treatment of Tigran Gambaryan in Nigerian custody raises serious concerns about human rights violations and the lack of proper medical care for detainees. The Nigerian government’s reluctance to address his health issues and the continued denial of his basic rights is a clear violation of his dignity and well-being. It is imperative that immediate action be taken to ensure Gambaryan’s health and safety while in custody. The case is set to continue on September 4th, and it is crucial that justice be served for Tigran Gambaryan.
